How to play Barrier Blitz

1. 1Sign in, open the lobby and press Find a Match to be seated against a live opponent, or take the free practice board against the bot without an account.
2. 2You and your opponent each start on the centre square of your own baseline of a 9×9 board, with ten barriers each.
3. 3Your turn is exactly one action: walk your pawn one square up, down or sideways — never diagonally — or place one barrier.
4. 4When your pawns stand face to face with no barrier between them you may jump straight over your opponent instead; if the square directly behind them is blocked, you move diagonally to one of the two squares beside them.
5. 5The first pawn to reach any square of the opposite baseline wins the match.

Rules

• A barrier is two squares long and sits in the groove between squares, so it blocks BOTH players, in both directions. Each player has ten.
• Two barriers may never overlap or cross each other, and a barrier may never completely cut off either player's remaining route to their goal — a placement that traps a player for good is refused.
• A pawn moves one square orthogonally per turn and never diagonally, except for the lateral jump described above.
• Barriers may not be jumped. A diagonal jump in particular is only legal when both the square you pass beside the opponent and the square you land on are open.
• Each turn is one action, move or barrier — never both — and the turn passes immediately afterwards.
• Nothing about the position is hidden and nothing is drawn during play: there are no dice, no cards and no random element at all. Both players can see the entire board.
• Every accepted action is decided by the server from its own stored position. The client sends an action address and the version of the position it was shown, and nothing else — a stale tab, a double submit or a replayed turn is refused.

Scoring — what decides the winner

• There is no score. A match has one winner: the first pawn to reach any square of the opposite baseline.
• A match also ends when a player resigns — the win is awarded to the opponent, and the result is recorded server-side.
• A player who leaves and does not return forfeits: the match is awarded to the opponent, and the remaining seat is told the match was decided by abandonment.
• Barrier Blitz can never end in a draw. Somebody always walks to a baseline, resigns or forfeits.

Strategy and tips for Barrier Blitz

• Race and block at the same time. A barrier that does not lengthen your opponent's route to the far baseline is usually a wasted turn — count the squares before you spend one.
• Barriers cut both ways. Because a barrier blocks its owner too, the strongest placements are the ones that slow your opponent while leaving your own shortest path intact.
• Think in shortest paths, not in steps. Your real position is the number of moves it will take each pawn to arrive, so a turn that adds two moves to your opponent's route is worth far more than a turn that adds one.
• Keep a route in reserve. A barrier may never seal either player off completely, but it can leave you exactly one long way round — so avoid spending your last barrier early and then having to walk the long way yourself.
• Late in the game the jump matters. Standing adjacent to your opponent with an open square behind them is a free two-square gain, so use barriers behind their pawn to deny them the same thing.
• Do not mirror your opponent's walls. Copying a placement usually cancels out, whereas a barrier placed on the side they are not using buys you tempo on the side they are.

What it tests

Barrier Blitz tests planning, spatial reading and nerve. It is a perfect-information game with no randomness anywhere, the winner is derived server-side from the position, and a ranked online result moves your own Barrier Blitz Elo and trophy ladder — so the ladder measures the decisions you made and nothing else.

How many barriers do I get?

Ten each. That count is fixed by the rules and is shown for both seats throughout the match, straight from the server's own position.

Can a barrier trap a player completely?

No. Every legal barrier must leave both pawns a route to their goal, so a placement that would seal a player off for good is refused by the server before it is applied.

Can I jump over my opponent's pawn?

Yes, when the two pawns stand on neighbouring squares with no barrier between them. If the square directly behind your opponent is blocked or off the board, you may move diagonally to either square beside them instead — as long as neither of those squares is itself blocked.

Is there a turn clock?

No. Barrier Blitz is turn-based with no timer — you have as long as you need for each of your turns, and a match only ends on a win, a resignation or a long disconnect.

Does the AI practice move my rating?

No. Free practice runs entirely in your browser against the bot and is never recorded as a ranked match, so it cannot change your Elo, your trophies or your win record. Only a completed online 1v1 match does that.

Is it free to play?

Yes. Nothing is wagered, there is no entry cost of any kind, and a ranked result is rewarded with rating and trophies rather than anything of value.
