How to play Dots & Boxes

1. 1Sign in, open the lobby and press Play to face a live opponent, or take a free practice game against the bot.
2. 2The board is a 7×7 grid of dots forming 6×6 boxes — 36 in total — with 84 possible edges.
3. 3On your turn, draw exactly one edge between two adjacent dots.
4. 4If your edge completes the fourth side of a box, you claim it and score it.
5. 5Claiming at least one box gives you another turn, so keep going until you place an edge that does not close a box.
6. 6The game ends when all 84 edges have been drawn. The player with more boxes wins.

Rules

• One edge per turn. Nothing else may be drawn.
• When a move completes the fourth side of a box, that box is claimed by the player who drew the edge and added to their score.
• Completing at least one box grants another turn. Multiple boxes closed by the same edge still count as ONE bonus turn, so the game cannot loop indefinitely on a single chain.
• The game ends when all 84 edges have been drawn.
• Each turn runs on a 20-second server-enforced timer.

Scoring — what decides the winner

• The winner is the player holding more of the 36 boxes when all edges have been drawn.
• Boxes are the only score — there are no bonus points for chains, streaks or speed.
• A ranked result moves your per-game rating and your trophies for this game.

Strategy and tips for Dots & Boxes

• Learn the two phases. Early on, all moves are safe. Once only 'dangerous' edges remain — edges that give away a box — the game is entirely about not being the player who has to move first.
• Play every safe edge before you play a dangerous one. Safe edges close nothing, so they cost you nothing and keep you in the safe phase for longer.
• Count chains before you commit. When you are forced to open one, the boxes you concede depend on the parity of the chains left on the board, so a little counting turns a loss into a draw.
• Open the shortest chain available. If you must give boxes away, give away as few as possible and keep the rest of the board intact.
• Think in sacrifices. Handing over a single box to change who has to move next is often worth far more than the box itself.
• Use your timer. You have twenty seconds per move, which is enough to trace the remaining board properly — most losses at this level are a missed box count, not a misclick.

Dots & Boxes tests combinatorial planning and parity counting. It looks casual and reads as a counting game, which is exactly why good players win it consistently.
