Chess — Competitive 1v1 Chess Online

How to play Chess

1. 1Sign in, open the lobby and press Play to be matched with another player, or take a free practice game against the bot.
2. 2Select a piece to see its legal destination squares, then pick a destination to move.
3. 3The position is validated by the server, so illegal moves are simply not available to you.
4. 4Compute, move, and try to force checkmate before your opponent does.

Rules

• Standard chess movement for all pieces. Castling, en passant and pawn promotion are all supported.
• A move that would leave your own king in check is illegal.
• Checkmate ends the game immediately in the checkmating player's favour.
• Stalemate, insufficient material, and the standard repetition and fifty-move rules resolve the game as a draw.
• Matches are strictly 1v1. AI practice games are unrated and never affect your Elo or trophies.
• Leaving a live match concedes it.

Scoring — what decides the winner

• Delivering checkmate wins the game.
• A drawn ending is recorded as a draw, and a draw moves no rating.
• Wins and losses in a ranked match move your per-game chess Elo rating and your chess trophy total.
• Only ranked games against another player affect progression — practice games against the bot are free and unrated.

Strategy and tips for Chess

• Fight for the centre early. A knight on a central square controls far more of the board than one on the rim.
• Develop your pieces before you start attacking. Moving the same piece twice in the opening usually just wastes a tempo.
• Castle early. It is the cheapest way to get your king safe and your rook into the game in one move.
• Before every exchange, count attackers and defenders. A piece that is attacked more times than it is defended is a piece you are about to lose.
• Look for the forcing move first when you are on the attack: a check, a capture or a threat limits your opponent's replies to a much smaller set.
• In worse positions, trade pieces; in better positions, keep them. Fewer pieces on the board usually means the stronger side has an easier time converting.

What it tests

Chess tests calculation, planning and pattern recognition. Because nothing is drawn or rolled, a long win rate is an honest measure of improvement — which is why GRYND gives it its own Elo ladder.

Chess FAQ

Do I need an account to play?

You can read this page and explore the site without one, but a ranked game against another player needs a signed-in account. A free practice game against the bot is the entry point if you just want to try it.

Does chess use the same rating as the other games?

No. Ratings are per-game and independent. Your chess Elo lives in its own ladder and is never affected by results in other games.

Can I play against the computer?

Yes — the lobby offers a bot opponent. Bot games are unrated: they do not change your Elo or your trophies.

What happens if both players just shuffle pieces?

The standard repetition and fifty-move rules apply, so a game with no progress is resolved as a draw.

Is it free to play?

Yes. There is no wager and no entry cost of any kind.
